STD question. Please give me advice. I would appreciate it?

Is genital herpes type 1 really that bad?a lot of people have cold sores but nobody minds kissing them when they don't have 1 there. It's a very small risk of getting one. So how come people make a big deal about herpes type 1 genitally. If you don't have a breakout and u have sex with protection isn't it like the same chance of passing on a cold sore through kissing when you don't have one there? Also made I add I have only had the one breakout from te beginning. My doctor said a lot of people never get a breakout again as the virus becomes dormant.
