New Venus Fly Trap??????????

hi i have just bought a venus flytrap an i think its in its dormant period. I tried to have a little fun and i stuck my pinkie into his mouth but it didnt do anything. I also noticed two "dead" looking ones and the lady at the greenhouse told me when i got home to clip them so i did? But i have about 5 other ones in the little pot they came in. Some have their mouths completely closed. Some have them completely open. Any thoughts? Also how do i know when there out of the dormant period??
