I read a book a long time ago, cannot remember author or title. need help finding it.?

it was written before 2009. About a young girl who had dormant magic powers, goes through a lot, falls in love with the guy who found her. i'm very fuzzy on the details, would appreciate any help on this. It wasn't a very well known book, and it was part of a series. I can't remember if it was a trilogy or a four-part series.
