Could i have herpes?!!!!?

I went my gum clinic about 5 months ago to get checked out as i was in new relationship, everything was clear but recently ive been gettin sore down below and was worried it could be genital herpes, i also heard they lay dormant for years! can they not tell by tests if i have herpes when they lay dormant im so worried!
